Random Monday Musings

Filed under: Issues — Tags: writing — Christa Allan @ 1:47 am
I have more ideas for books than I have sense, and with the new school year yapping at my heels like a rabid chihuahua, I’m desperately flinging words onto paper and into the computer. And, in the meantime, I’m attempting to piledrive that obnoxious internal editor– the one who perches at the top of your laptop, and in-between bites of your heart, leans over, reads what’s on the screen, and starts chortling–into the muck so deep it’ll disappear.

So, tonight, I’m determined to bring one idea to a mini-proposal stage to send to my agent, but everything I write is clunky. My writer voice is mute. Perhaps staying awake after one o’clock in the morning is not conducive to writing that doesn’t sound like two by fours banging together.

Pause for a commercial break:

Today’s sermon was about the verbicide of “holy”; it’s intended to mean “to be different.”  So, the pastor tells this amusing story about a woman who’s experiencing headaches, goes to the doctor, and her response to his questions is that she’s a founding member of something or other in the church, and the doctor says something to the effect of, “Oh, is your halo too tight?” [I hope he forgives me for mutilating this joke]

All this to get to the point….which is really no point, but I had this little bolt of a book title idea…You Had Me at Halo.., only to come home and discover that Amanda Ashby’s already come up with and written an entire book to go along with it.

********

On the way to church, I’m discussing/whining about the few days I have left to write, and the ideas ping-ponging in my brain with my oldest daughter who has the dubious fortune of being the first line of defense for my book ideas and writing. At one point, I told her that, with twenty-one years teaching, you’d think I’d be able to parlay that experience into a book idea, and how frustrating is that, and blahblahblah. Then a bit of quiet and my darling daughter says, “Um, mom, maybe God’s telling you it’s not time to write that yet.”

When did she get to be so smart?

I have decided that it’s time for my blog to be more defined. I kept my FICTIONARY blog separate from this one because it’s primarily book tours, author interviews, book reviews, and miscellaneous product reviews, and generic writing information.

Years ago, I started WORD GAME WEDNESDAY because my students enjoyed playing the games, and I enjoyed knowing what would appear on my blog every Wednesday.

So, my goal is to get this blog to reflect my little splintered self….teacher me, writer me, family me, and God-child me.

I have a few ideas. I’ll share more later because I’m about to fall asleep with my head on the keyboard.

I’m open to suggestions, so suggest away…Oh, and tomorrow the names for the Gary Chapman books!

It’s always so good to hear I’m not the only one who struggles with writing (and I have so much less to say)! I look forward to seeing more of you, splintered you. And in the meantime, I pray God leads you to inspiration to write, discipline to finish, and resources to get it in the hands of others!

    Thanks, Natalie!

BTW…I posted a longish comment on your blog yesterday, and I fear I forgot to post it after it previewed. Duh.
