JESUS WALKS

Filed under: Moments of Grace — Christa Allan @ 2:59 am

Now, before you go all “hit the delete button, Christa’s lost her last marble” on me, LISTEN to the words in this video. Yes, the images are disturbing; they’re supposed to be. Maybe the delivery isn’t what’s in your comfort zone, maybe KanYe’s beat makes you twitch, and maybe imagining inner-city Jesus is a tough one.

Listen anyway.

Trust me on this one.

I crossed KanYe off my Christmas card list [insert laughter here] after he went all bonkers on live television during an NBC concert fundraiser for Hurricane Katrina victims.  I was watching from my daughter’s home in Houston, where we’d driven five days after staying in our house during the hurricane [home fine; humans stupid]. Had KanYe been paddling a canoe rescuing people at the time, I might not have been as apoplectic.

Anyway. .  that was then, this is now. . .

KanYe West – Jesus Walks 1:st Version

Hats off to Cheryl Klein at Brooklyn Arden (Cheryl’s personal blog; she’s Senior Editor at Arthur A. Levine books) for posting this video.

Things that put the “wo[e]” in women

Filed under: Random Rumblings — Tags: women — Christa Allan @ 9:10 pm

1. More children = fewer teeth for mothers.

According to researchers at Yale University and New York University: “In the highest socioeconomic group, women with no children were missing on average less than one tooth, those with one child were missing about two teeth and those with four or more were missing about five teeth.

Among the women in the lowest socioeconomic group, those with no children on average were missing two teeth, those with one child were missing an average of three teeth and those with four or more were missing more than eight teeth.”

2. Certain hairstyles, earrings, and perfume can trigger migranes in women. This according to Dr. Seymour Diamond of the Diamond Headache Clinic.

3. Swedish researchers say women who breast-feed their babies for at least thirteen months or longer are less likely to get rheumatoid arthritis.

4. Clay Aiken’s having a baby. Sort of.

TMZ (according to msn.com) reported: “The former “American Idol” alum, 29, will be the father of Jaymes Foster’s baby, the sister of record mogul David Foster. Celebrity Web site TMZ.com reports that multiple sources have confirmed the news to the gossip site. Foster, 50, who was reportedly artificially inseminated, is due in August. The two live together in Los Angeles.”

It really isn’t brain surgery

One of the bountiful blessings of the internet is site-linking, which can either provide endless hours of entertainment, education, or endless procrastination. A recent serendipity was finding Angela Maiers on Twitter, and that discovery brought me to her blog, Angela Maiers Educational Services.  She had me at, “Teachers need to be great learners to lead great learners.” Pronto bookmarking there.

Anglea’s blog today features a slide show by Garr Reynolds of Presentation Zen on Dr. John Medina’s book Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School.

His book should be required reading for every classroom teacher, school administrator, and school board. If you’ve been to as many workshops as I have where the presenter is reading, word for word,  the power point presentation on the screen from the copy of the power point presentation slides that each participant was given on the way….well, no need to explain, right?

The Twelve Brain Rules according to John:

Brain_rules
FROM DR. MEDINA’S SITE:

A sampling of the ideas you’ll encounter:

-For starters, we are not used to sitting at a desk for eight hours a day. From an evolutionary perspective, our brains developed while working out, walking as many as 12 miles a day. The brain still craves the experience, especially in sedentary populations like our own. That’s why exercise boosts brain power (Brain Rule #1) in such populations. Exercisers outperform couch potatoes in long-term memory, reasoning, attention, problem-solving tasks, and more. I am convinced that integrating exercise into our eight hours at work or school would only be normal.

- As you no doubt have noticed if you’ve ever sat through a typical PowerPoint presentation, people don’t pay attention to boring things (Brain Rule #4). You’ve got seconds to grab someone’s attention, and only 10 minutes to keep it. At 9 minutes and 59 seconds, something must be done quickly—something emotional and relevant. Also, the brain needs a break. That’s why I use stories in this book to make many of my points.
